Follow your Heart!

I don't mind admitting it....I've got the bug! The bug for these little doodles!
Planning a workshop is never easy. You have to think from start to finish or rather how you will get the students from learning a basic technique and then running it through to a finished item.

People have different levels of experience and learn at different rates. The advanced students have to be held back, while the beginner students seem sometimes to be fast tracked..

It was while I was preparing this lettering workshop, that I got the bug for these colourful doodles.

For the advanced students my fear is that they will find it.....shall we say 'Kitsch' while I worry that the beginners will not grasp that the playful lettering is a different thing altogether than the formal lettering they are used to. Contemporary calligraphy can only come from a solid foundation and with experience of of formal lettering....no matter how easy it looks.

After, writing and rewritings my class plan, I've decided to 'Follow My Heart' and run with this idea. It will not suit everybody and it will appeal to some more than others. However, I have decided to take my own advice for once.

By following your heart you can be sure of one thing, you are being true to yourself, and from this comes enthusiasm which hopefully you can pass on to your students

So often we hold back through fear. When the head takes over and all sense or reason flies out of the window and the seeds of doubt creep in. Don't let your head rule your decision making. Just go wit the flow and 'Follow Your Heart', your most basic core instinct!

How will you 'Follow Your Heart' today?

Work Submitted For Selection at Ferens Art Gallery

Well, I've finally done it....entered my work for selection
at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull.
Well, they say there's a first for everything and while I have exhibited all over the country, this is the first time I have submitted work for selection and in a 'Art' Exhibition. In the past the exhibitions have been under the banner of Calligraphy or Lettering Art.

Saturday morning saw us getting up bright and early....well not so sure about the 'bright', this Pixie hates mornings :o) and heading off to Hull.
Submitting work is easy and painless, once you get over the colly wobbles of actually having your Lettering Art under the label of 'Is it art?'. The work is left for scrutinising and hopefully selection by the judges.
Only around 10% of the work is chosen and it's down to the judges and their preference on the day which pieces are chosen....so it's left there on a wing and a prayer and with a large sprinkling of Pixie dust in the hopes that either or both of mine and Steves work is selected. We've entered 2 pieces each, so, watch this space :o)

What's going on!!!!

Well if you're wondering where I've been and what's going on....jaunt over to my Inspired by Script Blog to see for yourself....or simply click on the links above the photos.

This year has got off to a flying start and I've written 4 blog posts this evening....and I haven't even scratched the surface.
I've already done a Wedding Order....

I have a separate Wedding Website,
just for the Wedding Side of my business
I already sold a Piece of work....
Had another one Commissioned....

Written and personalised a Baby Birth Certificate....

And made a concertina card
for a very ill lady in Sussex

We've booked 2 Wedding Fairs and Steve has got 2 shows booked for his Jewellery...Oh yes and did I mention 3 Art Shows this year too. I've also got a day teaching at North East Scribes next month....which I am so looking forward to. It's nice to get together with like minded folk and I love teaching and inspiring others. We also have plans to expand the Wedding side of the business....but more about that later. All in all we have a busy year ahead, but one that we are both looking forward to. It's nice to have the support and encouragement that we so often need when working as artists and for ourselves. Having someone to bounce ideas off is so important.

Busy, Busy, Busy.....and Christmas fast a comein'....

Steve and I have been busy, busy, busy. Why is it after Halloween, the days seem to fly past? My beautiful Granddaughter is growing and developing fast, the nights draw in ever faster and before you know it.....it's 'THAT' time of year again.

If you want to see what we've been up to.... pop over and see my blog at http://inspiredbyscript.blogspot.com and Steve's Blog at http://stevesmithsjewellery.blogspot.com

At the moment we are very much concentrating on the business, with lots of making and lots of planning and marketing. We have 3 Craft Fairs booked before Christmas and into the New Year there are plans afoot for BIG changes at the Studio and within the business. It's all go, go, go and we are having a ball :o)

I expect blogging here will be thin on the ground for a little while longer, so please bear with us and make sure you check out my Inspired By Script Blog and Website to keep up to date.
Obviously those of my friends who also join me on FaceBook will be more up to date than ever lol. Oh what fun we have!

Meanwhile, keep creating you lovely, wonderful people.... For Creating washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life. Blessings xxx

Inspired by Words... I certainly am!

Ok, ok, so the great Mrs. Fit who jumped up and down ladders yesterday, perhaps isn't as fit as she thought (now where's that yoga book!) anyway, the opportunity for a day out arose and feeling like I'd done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson, I jumped at the chance.
So, look where I've been today....
Can you tell where it is yet?

Although Ripon Cathedral is not my favourite Cathedral, Durham is,) I was there for a very special reason. And I was not disappointed. In fact I was overwhelmed, stunned, very proud and speechless....yes can you believe it.... me speechless! That's a first!

I was there to see an Exhibition by North Yorkshire Calligraphers, of whom I am the President. The group was formed way back in 1990, by myself and with the great help of 2 others. The work is superb...in fact I will go further than that and say that is some of the finest and inventive calligraphy and Lettering Art that has been seen for many years. Well, done everyone!

If you get the chance to go, please do! The exhibition is open daily until the end of the month.

Below are just 3 of the many pieces that took my breath away....

Ian Ditchburn (Chairman)

Anne Porritt
And again, another by Ian

The photos of the exhibition
show only a half of the exhibits.
Didn't they do well?

Calligraphy and Lively Lettering Art in Cumbria

Well, I'm back, rejuvenated and revitalised after my teaching day in Penrith. Penrith is in the Lake District in Cumbria and a beautiful place it is too. The Lakes always seem to hold a special magic for me, and with the changing of the seasons and Autumn's arrival, the turning leaves on the trees make it specially beautiful
Eden Valley Scribes (you can see their blog by clicking the highlighted text) are a wonderful bunch of people, with a great sense of humour and it was great to be back! They're a small but very keen group and they embraced the Lively Lettering without complaint. I think the fact the tutor made them tea and coffee all day, to keep them happy and keep them working helped! For a more detailed look at the day go to The Eden Valley Scribes Blog;

I was staying at Alison 's overnight (Eden Valley Scribes Blog Owner), but on our way home we stopped off her....
Gretna Green became famous for it's runaway marriages, this began in 1753 when an act of parliament was passed in England which stated that if both parties to a marriage were not at least 21 years old, then consent to the marriage had to be given by the parents. This Act did not apply in Scotland where it was possible for boys to get married at 14 and girls at 12 years old with or without parental consent. Since 1929 both parties have had to be at least 16 years old but there is still no consent needed.
Couples still think they can just turn up and get married, but 15 days notice has to be served...just in case either party is still married! It is still one of the most popular Wedding Venues and host to around 5000 weddings a year!
Then I spent a wonderful night with a paranormal investigator and owner of 'Mysterious Britain', We talked of ghosts, orbs, legends and haunting and things that go bump in the night....lol. Alison kept herself amused with loads of Bookbinding Books that I had taken along.
All too soon (but probably much to the relief of Alison's ears, it was time to go home....it was wonderful catching up.
The visit to Castle Rigg Stone Circle was as per usual, wet, misty and windy, but somewhere I like to go if I am over there.

On the way back we visited Rheged with it's food, exhibitions, events and the most wonderful array of fine craft shops. Definitely worth a visit if you are over there.
I'm home and my batteries feel recharged. I'm repeating the workshop for North East Scribes in just a little less than a months time. And I can't wait!
I now realise I miss teaching so much. Not the 2 hours a week and out every night kind of teaching, but full days where you can inspire and create and get peoples juices flowing. I love motivating people and I would prefer to leave the basic lettering teaching to others...I want them when they are on their way and ready to open up to new experiences and have found the joy and passion that Letters can bring into their art work.
So thank you Alison, and Ian for being such wonderful hosts and thank you Eden Valley Scribes for your lack of complaints and dedication to the continuation of Lettering Art! May your nibs never run dry.

Calligraphy Workshop in Cumbria

Whoooo hoooo. I'm off to teach in Penrith tomorrow for a wonderful group of calligraphers Eden Valley Scribes. I've been busy all week preparing notes and exemplars and working out my class plan. I was musing at how much calligraphy and Lettering Art in particular has changed over the years. When I submitted the following piece for my Diploma, the letters were 'expected' to be formal, consistent and show a good knowledge and understanding of the style used. I suppose I must have done something right as I passed with 97% and got a distinction. I think it's highly unlikely I'd pass these days...not with these eyes! lol

I think it's worth reading you the words on this piece they are as follows
Mantra is a sound, and sound is an aspect of energy
A powerful energy that can influence the mind.

In order to experience meditation and Samadhi
you need a certain quality of mind,
Those who practice meditation without preparing the mind,
Do not have the right kind of experience.

The sounds of specific mantras make the mind clean
of it’s impurities and impressions.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika Ch4 V113
And this ones from The Lord of the Rings....
Yes calligraphy has come a long way. Tomorrow I'll be teaching the letters that I have been developing/playing with. The hardest thing for me has been the fact that I have had to Analise my own letters, take them to pieces, put them into groups and in some way make them connect, in order to teach them to others. Because I worked on the letters without much thought I've had to come backwards in order to come forwards (if you see what I mean). I have done a couple of pieces in pencil crayon...not very happy with them but they will show a technique

And I've done this piece using a thicker nib than I am going to teach with, showing that weight, size and form can give you a huge range of possibilities.
Here's a closer look at those letters....

I love teaching. It gives me the chance to pass on the knowledge, tip and techniques that I have learnt over the last 20 years and keeps the spirit of Lively Lettering alive and well in this desperate age of computers. People are so not used to picking up a pen these days never mind a broad edged nib. So many things are done on computer...even art! I'm sorry folks but theres nothing that can beat that wonderful urge to get down, get inky and get dirty. I'm staying over at the wonderful Alisons and Sunday gives me the chance to go and visit the wonderful Castle Rigg with it's stone circle and panoramic views. Wonderful! Hopefully the Pixie will be well rested and rejuvenated, ready to get my head around the stack of books I need to read over the coming weeks.

Have a great weekend.

Salutation To The Dawn from the Sanskrit

Here's my second entry for the exhibition at Ripon Cathedral. I remember so clearly the first time I heard it, it was during a Hatha Yoga Class that I attended. Ahhhh happy days. Our tutor also covered Ayurveda Medicine and philosophy. I had already studied Tibetan Buddhism so the philosophy sat easily with me. My waking up routing every day was 3 full rounds of the Salute to the Sun.....crippling at first! Ohhhh I must get back to my Yoga.

CLICK ON PICTURE FOR A BETTER VIEW
The words are as follows:
Listen to the salutation to the dawn,
Look to this day
for it is life,
the very life of life,
In its brief course lie all the verities
and realities of our existence.

The bliss of growth,
the splendour of beauty,
For yesterday is but a dream
and tomorrow is only a vision,
But today well spent
makes every yesterday
a dream of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well therefore to this day.
Such is the salutation to the dawn.
Sadly, no matter how many pictures I took of this piece, they never came out. The piece is framed and on sale for £95.

Exhibition Piece - Dreaming of Oneness by Jamie Sams

Oh I do hope that either one or all of these pictures enlarge

I was asked to submit a couple of pieces of work for the North Yorkshire Calligraphers Annual exhibition that is to be held at the prestigious Ripon Cathedral. The exhibition opened on Friday and will run for the month of October. Many of the pieces of work are for sale (including my own). 4 pieces actually sold as the exhibition was being hung!

As their founder and honorary President, I must admit I was feeling under pressure to 'produce the goods'. I felt really difficult knowing that many of the group are now up to my level!
For my first piece I chose a poem from the book Dancing The Dream, by Jamie Sams.

The poem is called Dreaming Oneness and goes like this....
Take me gently into the dawn,
Where my dreams become the light
Uniting with the radiance of the sun
Shedding the indigo of my spirits flight,
Return me to the waking world
With vivid images imprinting my heart
Grasping the maps of newborn paths
Allowing my life to become living art

September Musings

A journey of a thousand miles,
starts with a single step

What a month September was! Just looking back and reflecting on the changes that seem to come hand in hand with the turning of the wheel and our journey into Autumn.

I had a wonderful birthday....my son and his wife surprised me with this wonderful 'icecream' birthday cake, complete with glitter and sparkles and a special Happy Birthday to the Purple Pixie on it....Hmmmm delicious :o)

My birthday day was spent at Stokesley show with family. And in the livestock tent...I saw this.....
A wonderful rare breed rabbit (called a hare actually although it is a rabbit) a perfect replica of a Moon Gazing Hare! I WANT ONE!!!!!

Ive done a couple of Christening posters...
And two pieces of work for an exhibition., I'll write about these in another blog post.

Stokesley show and my birthday was definitely a turning point. I have a deep fear of heights and fair ground rides. After my first declaration about needing to overcome my fears on both these levels while staring at the big wheel and changing my mind half a dozen times.....I did it! Ironically doing that was a catalyst towards other moves I was about to make and really wasn't prepared for.
Many years ago I used Bach Flower Remedies. I was last weekend in a very strange place, I needed to make a decision about my 'relationship' (if you can call it that with the said Beltane Man. I tried to shift my preconceived ideas and deal with how I 'didn't feel' about him, and I really did try and get at least some feeling for him.....but they just weren't there. We had nothing in common. He is very laid back, to the point he had no dreams, no excitement and no real motivation. My sense of humour I'm sure he found pathetic and even at times childish, but there again that's me! lol. And I knew I had to end it as it was going and never would go anywhere. I took the remedies (6 of them actually!) and something shifting in me to give me the courage to say goodbye. No tears, no anger, no....nothing really. Just relief. I was finding the relationship depressing....and I don't need that. So happy Pixie is on her own.
Then my friend dying, while tragic though it was, made me have to take a train journey on my own for the first time since I lost my sight. Was I scared? Yes! I was absolutely terrified. But it was either that or miss her funeral. More remedies...I took them and I did it! And now.....Well, now I have the bug for travelling! I don't know where I'm going and where I will end up, but I have to do this, again and again and again. It's the only way to overcome fear.....Oh yes....the Pixiie Power is back!

Be Careful What you Wish For

Oh yes! Be VERY Careful What you Wish For!

One of the things I hate to hear is someone saying to another ‘Be Careful’. It contours up and says to the unconscious mind that they are not safe and something terrible is more likely than not going to happen to them. So when I say, Be Careful What You Wish for, I mean it as in be careful what you put out there, for what you wish for will come true, whether your wish is a prayer or a spell, and what you put out there comes back to you 3 fold, so when wishes come true make sure your really ready for whatever comes your way.

As Beltane fast approaches the earth waking up with great velocity. The God and the Goddess and joined in union, the male and the female of plant, animal and human are bouncing about with renewed energy and natures flow is in full swing.
The Pixies market garden (well it certainly looks like one!) is well on it’s way and my original ‘
Wish List’ created in January is well on it’s way to being completed, and that’s without even trying! I have planted for what feels like weeks and weeks and much to my amazement, things are starting to grow. I’ve planted, potatoes, carrots all colours and varieties, parsnips, courgettes, peppers, runner beans, French beans and broad beans, beetroot, spinach, aubergines (doing very nicely) and sweet corn (also doing very nicely). My salad stuff is starting to grow too, spring onions, radish, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and other salad leafs, hopefully the Pixie will eat cheap this year. I’ve been vegetarian for 25 years now so eating rabbit food holds no fear lol.
I’m enjoying coming home at night and watering the plants, there’s something really wonderful about getting back to nature and compost up your nails. It did play havoc with the French manicure I had last week though.
Ah well, every blessing has it’s down sides.

’m looking forward to my friend Ambermoggie and Mr. Mog’s, coming to stay for a couple of days next week, a great surprise for Beltane and it will be so good to catch up. I met them both around…. Hmmm must be 7 or 8 years ago now. We were close the minute we met and have stayed in touch ever since. I’m so looking forward to seeing them again, so it will be a short week at the studio, ahhhh the joys of working for yourself!

I also wished for an exhibition and it seems to have plopped right down on my lap. It will be scheduled for October, plenty of time for advertising, press releases and marketing, hopefully with a preview evening. We’ve (Me and
Spirit Whispers) have decided to call it ‘The Spirit of Nature' a subject close to both our hearts. We are holding a joint exhibition which lessons the burden and pressure of getting a stack load f work out. Although 5 months sounds a long time, it isn’t. We’ve already had 4 months of this year! And before we know it Summer Solstice will be here…. Yes folks it’s only 7 weeks away! So, it will be all hands on deck for the next few months. Funny how things work out, looks like the Pixie is going to be busy, busy, busy and so glad I only have myself to please and no one else to consider, cook for, clean for, wash for. Once your kids are all grown up, it’s the time when we women, finally find time for ourselves, and it looks like I better enjoy it while it lasts, for I had a dream that Grandkids will be on the way far sooner than I think! And I think my son Paul and Sarah will be a tad bit shocked as to how fast they come along too! Lol.

Full Moon, Teaching Calligraphy and Family Day

The Moon, some real Stars
and my Son....and my Daughter-in-Law

Well, I promised this post last night and intended to write this sooner, but last night was the full moon and there was no sign of her, but tonight it’s crisp outside and the sky is clear… So I just had to take yet another picture of her in all her glory. It’s just part of the Pixies weirdness, photographing full moons…. Oh yes and rainbows. I think I have this innate fear that I perhaps will never see one again? I don’t know, perhaps it’s a sign of madness, but then most artists are a bit…. Er shall we say….’odd’….. the perfect get out clause I think.

I had a wonderful weekend. I haven’t felt the need to go out over winter at all, it’s been too cold and I’ve been too busy, planning, lots and lots of things, reading books (I never thought I would get through so many!) and creatively my minds been on overload, FANTASTIC!

I was booked to teach North Yorkshire Calligraphers. The subject and title was up to me, so I offered to teach a workshop and entitled it ‘The WOW Factor’. Now I have to say here, that these calligraphers are well experienced not brand new beginners and I have the pleasure of being their President (although I neglect them badly!) and in my opinion don’t deserve the title.

I was greeted by the new chairman, Alan Ditchburn, who immediately shouted everyone to get a camera as it was probably the first and only time the Chairman and President were going to be seen together (meaning what? Lol) I knew then that our sense of humour was the same and we were all in for a great day. The old familiar faces turned up one by one and everyone was pleased to see me.
SPECIAL NOTE: (old….oh that sounds like they are ancient! – I meant old in the way of I have known some of them 20 years!)
When I teach any calligraphy class, the first hurdle to get over is their lack of confidence, in both themselves and their abilities and capabilities. I discussed with them the need to let go and relax and as always sort out the inside in order to work on the outside. I think its amazing how many artists these days need to work through personal issues, look inside themselves and look at self improvement books and motivational books (Yes including me!) in order to release their Creative Spirits. Many years ago now I bought a copy of The Artists Way by Julia Cameron. (I also own The Vein of Gold also by Julia) It is a 13 week programme of Awareness, both artistically and creatively. You very soon find that when you’ve worked on the inside, what comes through your art is more true to yourself and the barriers drop. Most of it is just giving yourself permission to just ‘do’. Before getting creative, calligraphers need to go through the tedious, structure of formal lettering. Formal letters ensure that we know the rules, As the late great Granddad of calligraphy Edward Johnston said:Rules are only there to ensure good practice, once we have gained mastery by practice, we should form our own rules. Here here!

Well, as per usual, the day went too quickly, they worked hard and were without complaint…. A bit unruly at times, especially from the boys table, but teacher kept them all in check, even the new boy in the class…. If the poor guy ever comes back it will be a miracle! Lol. No really at the end of the day, calligraphers have the most wonderful and daft sense of humour. This can very easily get out of hand and encouragement is not usually needed. Summer Schools seem to be classic examples of this, where I have seen people drawing and painting great big affirmations and quotations on their clothes, bodies and anywhere else they can put letter, I’ve seen people try to gild eyelids (MINE if I remember correctly!)…. And all other manner of fun and frolics. Were a mad and crazy bunch, who have a passion for the written word, philosophers, spiritual teachers, and many other things that float their boat, but they also have a deep sense of caring, friendliness, spirituality and calmness. If you want a hobby that goes from the sublime to the ridiculous, but will take you around 10 years to become anywhere near competent,

LEARN CALLIGRAPHY!

Although there were 20 calligraphers, and most of them unaware of my nick name of the Purple Pixie....quite a few of them turned up in PURPLE! Even the Chairman....I told them there was no need for school uniform.... but flattered all the same! lol
The above is the serious photograph....and below? Well, no comment!
They turned out a fantastic amount of work considering they had to learn the technique from scratch. I told them they should get them banged in frames and non would look out of place in an exhibition. I'm sure you'll agree.

Sunday.....It was my daughter-in-law to be's birthday the week before and was to be going out for a meal with the family on the Saturday. Sadly they let her down and I couldn't go because of the teaching...so we went on Sunday instead. we spent a wonderful family day together. My son first took me to a huge Craft Warehouse and we spent over and hour (closer to 2 hours!!!!) in there. he's very artistic too so we were like kids in a sweet shop, poor Sarah couldn't really understand what we were getting all excited about. I did offer to buy her a kit, but she declined gracefully. lol. However we did surprise her with a 3 course meal (she thought that we were just grabbing something from McDonalds- hehehe). The food was fantastic, relaxed and best of all, we spent some well needed family time together.

And to end this post.....Venus, the LURVE sign can be seen clearly in the sky to the West at the moment. My son has seen it but unfortunately it's been a starless few nights. The sky to the West is obliterated by an obscene amount of floodlights lighting up the hospital like it was daylight. Tonight we had a power cut, the second today, and I did think I'd get the chance to see it while the sky was black without all the damn light polution, but I didn't. I tell you, once you are out in a field with no street lights, it's absolutely amazing how many stars you can see. there should be a law against street lights, the solution is easy....Downlighters! They do it in County Durham.

North East Scribes More Photos

I don't know what's happened over the last couple of weeks.... perhaps the floods distreacted me, but I've had these photos and meant to blog them ages ago!
I started my teaching career way back in 1988 and 20 years ago!!!! Where does the time go!!!! Anyway, it was ironic that I found myself back at the Art Centre in Darlington to teach some of my closest friends from my calligraphy past and some of these people I have known for the 20 years that have passed. Not too worrying until you realise that I was then younger than my son is now! NOW THAT’S SCAREY!

Anyway, the second Saturday in January we all met and I was there to teach them a contemporary lettering style to use in contrast to their more formal lettering that is so common for the calligraphers in the UK to use.
And below are some of the photo’s their wonderful work! Didn’t they do well? And remember this was the first time most of these folk had done this particular style.
It was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with everyone, reminisce over old times and remind ourselves of the fun and laughs we have shared over the years.
The Art Centre has been revamped, refurbished and remodelled. I’m not sure I like the clean cut image that the building now portrays…. I remember the ‘good old days’ where there were Beer Festivals, Folk Festivals and Jazz nights….. Where the students hung around at lunchtime and the whole place had a ‘lived in’ feel…. Oh yes for the Good Old Days. Oh no….now I’m starting to sound old! Reminiscing and being nostalgic about the past! Have to stop this, Pixies don’t get old! Lol.
Please keep scrolling down for more of the work from the students of North East Scribes
